If you’ve been following along with Port Phillip Insider these past few days, you’ll know a bit about Port Phillip Publishing’s recent investment conference in Port Douglas. We called it ‘The Great Repression — The Battle for Your Wealth in an Age of Financial Tyranny’.

That’s quite a title. And it was quite a conference.

Now, I’ve been to a lot of investment conferences in my life.

Some were quite good…others not so much. But I can tell you that I walked away from every one of them with something useful. At least one decent speaker with a bit of insight I hadn’t considered before.

But of the many conferences I’ve attended in Australia, Europe and North America over the years, very few — if any — managed to line up one top-notch speaker after another…for two full days. And absolutely none offered attendees access to such a wide range of valuable, and often irreverent, views and investment ideas. Views and ideas that all still fit neatly under the umbrella of ‘The Great Repression’.

OK. I know what you’re thinking. As the Managing Editor of Port Phillip Publishing, of course Bernd would say this. Well, frankly, I’m a bit offended.

My job here — alongside all of our editors — is to call it like I see it. And I can honestly say the two-day event in Port Douglas beats any other conference I have ever attended — including our own ‘World War D’ conference in Melbourne in 2014. (Which was excellent, by the way.)

Fortunately, you can find out the truth of my admittedly bold assertion for yourself. You see, we recorded the entire event, including breakout sessions, behind the scenes interviews, and question and answer sessions. To find out how you can get the video, audio, or just the written transcripts, simply click here.

Now, as I said, the speakers offered a wide range of viewpoints and investment insights. Some, including Vern Gowdie, Satyajit Das, and Dan Denning, were quite bearish. They spoke about how to protect your wealth during the coming financial meltdown and government cash grab. And they offered some great ideas.

But on the morning of day two, our resident tech guru Sam Volkering turned the tables on the bears.

More on that in a moment. First, a look at the markets.

Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 39.65 points, or 0.20%.

The S&P 500 gained 4.46 points, or 0.20%.

In Europe, the Euro Stoxx 50 fell 1.39 points, or 0.04%. Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 closed up 0.08%, and Germany’s DAX index gained 0.20%.

In Asian markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 is up 106.51 points, or 0.55%. China’s CSI 300 is down 0.66%.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 is up 29.00 points, or 0.52%.

On the commodities markets, West Texas Intermediate crude oil is US$51.99 per barrel. Brent crude is US$54.84 per barrel.

Gold is trading for US$1,135.35 (AU$1,565.58) per troy ounce. Silver is US$15.97 (AU$22.03) per troy ounce.

The Aussie dollar is worth 72.51 US cents.

A more upbeat take

As I mentioned, when Sam strolled onto the stage he had a positive bounce in his stride, and an even more upbeat presentation for the audience.

You probably won’t be surprised that it involved the rapidly evolving world of technology. But you will likely be surprised by just how big this opportunity could be. In Sam’s own words,

If you can see it — and you can take the opportunity and grasp it and take action on it — then you can build wealth for generations to come. Not just for yourselves, not for your kids, not for your grandkids, but for your grandkids’ grandkids.

Intrigued? I sure was.

So with Kris Sayce on leave today, I decided to share an extract from Sam’s presentation at ‘The Great Repression’ with you. Fair warning, though, this is a bit of a teaser…like that free square of cheese offered to you on a platter to entice you to buy the entire cheese role.

I can’t give you his entire presentation. Or the breakout session he conducted. Or any of the other keynote speakers’ takeaways. For that, you’ll have to go here.

Now over to Sam.

The Rise of the Mafia in the New World Order

By Sam Volkering

The Great Repression, hey? I was here yesterday through all the speeches; and I have to admit, they put the fear of the financial gods through me. I’m sure it probably did the same to you.

Now, the good news is, this morning is a lot more upbeat. So after me, and then Phil, hopefully you’re a little bit more upbeat about the world and how things are progressing along.

I was also told once that you should always start a presentation to a large group of people with a joke. The best one I could think of at short notice was ‘Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’.

As we said, the Great Repression — the battle for your wealth in the age of financial tyranny. But how repressed are you really right now?

Is it all that bad?

Or are we just telling ourselves that it’s all that bad? I think that’s one of the important things, that, by the end of today, we can help you weaponise the thing between your ears, your brain. We can make you more independent thinkers and take action for yourselves, and take opportunities that do exist, because opportunities do exist, even in a Great Repression. Even with financial tyranny, there are opportunities, always opportunities.

Though we’re going through an incredible social change, it’s a shift of power from repressive regimes to the individual. A lot of this is being driven by a new empire which I call the MAFIAA. The future today, as I said, is run by a new empire.

This empire is called the MAFIAA. Now, it’s not the New York MAFIAA or the Chicago MAFIAA. You know — the guys running bootleg alcohol. I’ll get to what the acronym means later on. Importantly, the MAFIAA is helping to liberate society.

Every one of you here has an opportunity to be free, to take power and control back into your own lives. This MAFIAA is providing us with the tools to achieve that. It’s happening right in front of your eyes. It’s just a matter of whether you’re actually seeing what’s going on.

How much repression are you willing to accept?

Now, as good as all the new empire — the MAFIAA — is, it’s not all as good as it might initially seem on the surface, because, while they’re liberating, there’s also an element of repression that they’re exerting on us all as well.

The question that you probably have to ask yourself is that, as we’ve always lived through repression in some form or another, what level are we willing to accept to free ourselves from the existing repression that we face today? Maybe a little bit of repression is not such a bad thing. Maybe it’s OK.

It’s just where on the spectrum you’re prepared to stop and say, ‘Actually, you know what? I’ll take that and I can be free and financially independent.’ Ask yourself over the next 45 minutes: is a little bit of liberation good, when I explain to you what the MAFIAA is, who they are, what they’re doing and why they can help you.

Now, I also believe they’re creating a wealth opportunity that’s never existed in the history of man.

You could wind back to the early 1900s and imagine you were living back then. Imagine all the great companies you could have invested in back in the early 1900s that, over the last 100 years, have grown into some of the most biggest, powerful companies on earth.

That opportunity is nothing compared to what’s coming for this current century.

If you can see it — and you can take the opportunity and grasp it and take action on it — then you can build wealth for generations to come. Not just for yourselves, not for your kids, not for your grandkids, but for your grandkids’ grandkids.

That’s exciting.

Vern mentioned it yesterday when he was talking about the Old World versus the New World. He said the New World always wins. It does. You’ve just got to be able to see what the New World is and where it’s coming from. You see, obviously, as the technology expert at Port Phillip Publishing, you kind of know where I’m going with this. I’m going to be talking about technologies and breakthrough technologies and technology companies.

What used to take 10, 20, 30 years to commercialise, or reach the mass market, now just happens in two or three — maybe five years if they’re slow about it. What used to take an eternity now takes an instant.

That presents short and longer term opportunities for people to make money. That’s what you’re here for. You’re here to understand how to protect your wealth…and then how to grow it.

To understand what’s coming — to understand how it’s going to unfold and what these companies are doing — you do need to have a little bit of an understanding about empires and repressive regimes that have failed in the past. Because if you know why they failed, and you can see what this new empire — the MAFIAA — are doing, you’ll see why they’re going to be a success, and why that shift in power is so important.

Let’s have a bit of a look at the past.

End game for nation states

When we look at previous empires, we see some of the great empires in history: the Persian Empire, the Hellenic Empire, the Roman Empire, the Ottomans, the Spanish, the Dutch. Of course, we probably wouldn’t really be sitting here today if it wasn’t for the great British Empire. Oh yeah, the Germans — they had a good time of it in the early 1900s. Of course, the American Empire, which, from about the 30s and 40s, became the strongest, most dominant empire that we’re all used to.

70 years of rule, the American Empire. That’s what we know. That’s why I led off with a joke about Trump and Clinton.

Really, before that — Jim Rogers spoke about it yesterday — America in the early, early parts of the 1900s, they were a shambles. Then they became the most dominant force, military-wise and economically, in the world.

What comes next?

I don’t think it’s a sovereign state that’s going to be the next power at all. Well, not a government, at least. I think the power is coming from the MAFIAA.

Now, every one of these great empires fell. The current American Empire is starting to crumble as well. Why do all these empires fail? Well, they get greedy. They overreach. Every single one of them tried to go for land grab and repressed the people of that land to their own new regime; to their own will. They went for the land, they invaded, they occupied, they repressed. It doesn’t work like that.

This land greed leads to uprising, revolt. When people are repressed, they push back. It’s human nature. Yet the more we push back, the more the repressive regimes repress — high taxes, harsher penalties, they might change the speed limits on the freeway. These are nanny-state approaches to repressing you, little things, but the more they repress, the more we revolt.

Every single time, society is more powerful than the state. Guarantee it. The collective society will always be more powerful than the state. The question is, does society realise that? And do they have the tools to achieve it?

I think today, and in the future, that, yes, society does have the tools to push back, uprise and push back the repressive governments. It’s all thanks to the MAFIAA.

If you were to run your own empire, how would you go about it?

Well, you wouldn’t follow the history lessons that we’ve just seen — go for the land, repress the people — that surely wouldn’t work. Flip the business model. Think about it. If you’re trying to get a whole bunch of people onside to run an empire, wouldn’t you want to get the people onside first?

What’s more important — getting the people or going for the land grab? Well, the land grab doesn’t work, so it must be the people.

Now the MAFIAA — this new empire — they want the people. They want 7.4 billion of us on Earth to follow their New World Order — 7.4 billion people. That might sound extravagant — every single person on Earth following this new empire; this new regime.

The funny thing is, success is inevitable for these guys. It’s happening. Everyone here is already part of the regime and you don’t even know.

It’s exciting, though, because they’re going to do it. 7.4 billion people are going to be part of this new empire, the MAFIAA, and it’s going to create the single biggest wealth-building opportunity we’ve ever seen. You’re going to get a lot of evidence from yesterday and maybe even today that suggests otherwise.

I like all the guys I work with, but I think they’re wrong.

The new empire, the MAFIAA — let’s get into: who are they? Who’s the MAFIAA?

The first Fortune 500 was published in 1955. Sitting on top was General Motors. The biggest company in America, probably the world, at the time. Have a look at the list of some of the others in the top 10: Exxon; US Steel, which happened to own Marathon Oil at the time; Gulf Oil; Mobil; DuPont, which happened to own Conoco Oil and Chrysler. Then there were two food companies because I guess we’ve got to eat.

Are you guys seeing [it]? Is there a trend there or is it just me? They’re all oil companies. The American Empire that has reigned for the last 70 years was built on oil. We know this. You can almost trace it back to a single moment in time — back in the late, sorry, back in the mid-40s when Franklin D Roosevelt was making buddies with King Saud of Saudi Arabia.

It’s no coincidence that they’re all in the Middle East at the moment still. The battle for oil — it’s like this story of the 20th century, but we’re not in the 20th century anymore. We’re in the 21st century. The oil state of American oil is falling. We know that it’s crumbling. Because we only have to look at the largest companies by market cap over the last 10 years to see what’s happening.

New World Order

Some of the biggest companies in the world — Exxon, PetroChina, Shell, Totalis; oil companies — well, that was at the turn of the century. Today, the five biggest companies in the world are all technology companies: Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook — they put the oil companies to shame. This is what’s coming — more of this. Less oil, less old 20th century, more New World Order.

That’s where we come to the MAFIAA. MAFIAA — Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Intel, Alphabet, Amazon — there’s your MAFIAA. They just make the acronym for me. It’s beautiful. Look at it — their market cap, when I did the slides a couple of weeks ago — how quickly it amounts.

Anyone want to tell me what the total market cap of these five companies is? $2.5 trillion in combined market cap. Five companies, all technology companies.

Who runs the MAFIAA? Why are these guys even important? What are they doing? What is this MAFIAA all about? Why should we even care? They’re the biggest technology companies in the world. Hands up if you’ve got a smartphone. You don’t say. Anyone Google this morning or use Google Weather to see what was going on? Anyone on Facebook, their kids?

Now I’ve got the MAFIAA; I’ve got these guys. These are the kings of this empire. There’s plenty of queens — well, underlings perhaps — underneath them that also work towards a better world.

You could add IBM, even as much as all they’re slightly on the decline. There’s so many companies that all sit atop of the corporate world. The biggest companies in the world. They’re all tech companies. They’re all providing us with tools, resources, opportunities to make money, grow our wealth, grow our personal lives, to just be rounded, better people.

Dan Denning mentioned it yesterday when he spoke about how maybe we have to change our thinking about what wealth is in the future. I completely agree with that. Now, wealth is not just about how much money you’ve got. It’s about your interactions with each other — with your neighbours, with your family — about what you do, how you mobilise, how you travel.

All of these companies are helping you to do that better. That’s opportunity. We know this. This shouldn’t be news to you guys.

You know these companies. You’ve heard of them, you deal with them every day. What are you doing about it? There’s no point in just seeing these companies and going, ‘Wow, they’re doing great things.’ You’ve got to invest in them. You’ve got to look at the opportunities and take action.

Use this, weaponise this. Do something. Help to make your life better.

We didn’t have the power that we’ve got now to do something about our own lives, our own wealth, our own financial wellbeing, and the friends and family that we have around us even a decade ago.

Now, all assets can help build wealth. All the presenters here and what they speak about are smart guys. You should take advantage of what they say. You can make money from gold and commodities and stocks and all that sort of thing.

But I think the biggest wealth opportunity you will have in your lifetime from now is through the MAFIAA and technologies.

If you don’t have some exposure to it, I think you’re crazy. I’m done.
